Aromatherapy Soaps

Soaps

These scented soaps are fun to make, and can be molded into a variety of shapes and styles. Make Sure your glycerin states that it is pure vegetable glycerin anything else is petroleum based.

Note: Please read al ingredients labels. I haven't found any Melt and Pour soap bases that did not have SLS or Propylene Glycol. If you find a source please let me know.

Instructions:

  1. Break 4 oz. of pure, unscented glycerin soap or other Natural Melt and Pour Soap into 3 equal pieces
  2. Cook according to directions. Do not use the microwave as it will destroy the medicinal properties of essential oils.
  3. While continuing to stir, quickly add any desired coloring, essential oil, or blend. There are specially made soap colors (be ware these are petroleum based) you can use, or you can use a drop or two of natural food coloring (turmeric ,beet, etc..)  for every four ounces of soap. The amount of essential oil or blends you use depends on how intense the odor of the oil is, and on how strong you wish your soap to smell. We found that 4-6 drops of essential oil for every four ounces of soap seemed to be a good amount in general.
  4. Quickly pour the liquefied soap into a soap mold, candy mold, or other plastic container (we found that coating the molds with a TINY amount of fractionated coconut oil  or vegetable before hand helped the soap come out a little easier or freeze) .
  5. Allow the soaps to sit for about 20-40 minutes until they have solidified.
  6. Take the soaps out of the mold.

Extra Ideas

  1. Wrap the soap in a colored tissue paper. Use tape or a fun sticker to hold the tissue paper closed.
  2. Place one or more soaps in a fun container or basket.
  3. When pouring soap into molds, fill the mold 3/4 of the way full, place a foam shape on the soap in the mold, then fill the mold the rest of the way full of soap. This can create a really cool effect, and is especially fun for younger children (just be careful not to use small foam pieces with children under three years old).
  4. Try creating two-tone soaps by filling a mold half-way with one color of soap, then filling the rest of the mold with another color soap.
