Blueberries help recover age-related memory loss 4-12-08

Blueberries and other phytochemical-rich foods may enhance memory in elderly people, a study suggests.

The UK study showed old rats fed with a diet with blueberries for a few weeks drastically improved their memory.

In the study, Dr Matt Witterman and team at the University of Reading and the Peninsula Medical School tested three groups of rats to see how blueberry powder would affect their memory.

In a memory test, young rats scored 90 percent right, suggesting their memory is very good.  At baseline, old rats scored only 57 percent correct.

But three weeks after being fed a standard rat diet with 2 percent blueberry powder, the old rats scored as high as 83 percent right.

The study is scheduled to appear in the peer-reviewed journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine.
