Interesting Facts: It is said that cardamom grew in the gardens of the King of Babylon in 720 B.C. The ancient Egyptians chewed cardamoms to whiten their teeth and simultaneously sweeten their breath. As early as 4 B.C., Indian Ayurvedic medicine texts used the spice to remove fat and as a cure for urinary and skin complaints. Cardamom essential oil was used in perfumes by ancient Greeks and Romans, and also recommended by Apicius, a famous Roman epicure, to counteract over-indulgence.

Medicinal Use: Cardamom essential oil has been used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine for over 3000 years - especially for pulmonary disease, fever, digestive and urinary incontinence complaints. Hippocrates recommended Cardamom essential oil for sciatica, coughs, abdominal pains, spasms, nervous disorders, urine retention and for bites of venomous creatures. Cardamom essential oil may be useful for anorexia, colic, cramps, dyspepsia, gas, gripping pains, halitosis, heartburn, vomiting, mental fatigue, and nervous strain. Cardamom essential oil can be used in flavoring pastries, cookies and cakes. Cardamom essential oil increases the effectiveness of Streptomycin in the treatment of Tuberculosis.
