Seven years ago, a careless error in the operating room resulted in permanent
damage to an otherwise healthy mother, Angelique Sutcliffe. She had been giving
birth to her daughter and began having very routine problems which typically
require the need for a painkiller. Doctors suspect that a clumsy medic may have
been walking past the trolley which holds the needles and antiseptics and a
small amount of antiseptic was splashed onto the needle which was intended for
use in the injection.
Later, Ms. Sutcliffe complained of a severe headache, confusion and
restlessness. She then began thrashing around on her hospital bed and it became
clear that something had gone terribly wrong. Although such a small amount of
fluid on the needle may have been impossible for doctors to see after the
accident had already occurred, they still agree that Angelique Sutcliffe was
clearly injected with enough cleaning fluid to cause permanent neurological
damage and consign her to a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
What may be viewed by some people as the beginning of justice for this poor
mother is that she finally received a very hefty compensation in court this week
amounting to close to ten million dollars. The Judge presiding over the case
said the following; “Your clients have absolutely no explanation as to how this
happened. A very serious mistake was made.” Miss Sutcliffe burst into tears as
she heard the Judge’s verdict and she began to hug her family and friends.
Comment:
If you are ever in a situation where you must be injected with anything. Make sure the needle came out of a sealed package and filled right in front of you. Don't be afraid to ask for a new one if they don't. With the mix ups in hospitals these days your life may depend on it.
