Interesting Facts: Ginger is often grown in a container and brought indoors in winter when water and light are reduced and the plant is allowed to "rest." Common cooking gingers are rarely found in garden centers as potted plants because they do not have much ornamental value. The Lancet, a highly respected British medical journal, reported excellent results in scientific tests using ginger to treat nausea: "The powdered rhizome of Zingiber officinale has been found to be more effective than dimenhydrinate (Dramamine®) in reducing motion sickness in individuals highly susceptible to this malady (Mowrey and Clayson, The Lancet, 1982)." Other reports from medical research indicate that ginger is effective in reducing the effects of morning sickness in pregnant women. The Latin name Zingiber is derived from the Sanskrit word, shringavera, which means "shaped like a deer's antlers. Medicinal Use: Ginger Root essential oil is beneficial for bruises, sores, carbuncles, regulates moisture, catarrh, chronic bronchitis, congestion, cough, sinusitis, sore throat, tonsillitis, swollen glands and dries excess mucus. Ginger Root essential oil assists with memory, digestion, arthritis, muscular aches and pains, fatigue, poor circulation, rheumatism, sprains, strains, diarrhea, sinusitis, cramps, colic, loss of appetite, gas, nausea, motion sickness, morning sickness, chills, colds, flu, fever, infectious and contagious disease, nervous exhaustion, tiredness, broken bones, and alcoholism. A three year study of 56 people with rheumatoid arthritis found that 75% found relief from pain and swelling; by taking ginger root essential oil. Ginger Root essential oil protects the liver from the toxic effects of valproic acid (Depakene) used to treat epilepsy and other seizure disorders. Using Ginger Root essential oil daily for a month can improve elevated levels of ALT and AST caused by valproic acid. Constituents: The essential oil (1 to 3% of the fresh rhizome) contains mostly sesquiterpenes, e.g., (-)-zingiberene (up to 70%), (+)-ar-curcumene β-sesquiphellandrene, bisabolene and farnesene. Monoterpenoids occur in traces (β-phelladrene, cineol, citral).
