Common Diuretic Used To Control Blood Pressure, Steals Calcium From Bones! 4-13-04

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Powerful diuretics used to control blood pressure can also steal calcium from the bones and cause significant bone loss in men who take them, researchers reported on Monday.

Older men who used the drugs the most had triple the bone loss of men who never used them, the researchers reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

They found a direct correlation between use of the drugs and bone loss in men -- putting them at risk of osteoporosis, which can cause broken hips and other broken bones.

Though osteoporosis is more common in women than men, one in five Americans with the bone-weakening condition is a man -- and as many as 2 million American men suffer from it.

Doctors should keep an eye out for this problem in men taking the drugs, said Dr. Lionel Lim of Griffin Hospital, in Derby, Connecticut, who led the study.

One of the most common brand names is Lasix, and these so-called loop diuretics are also sold under the generic name furosemide. Diuretics work to lower blood pressure by removing water from the blood via the kidneys.

With less blood circulating, the blood does not have to pump so hard. The kidneys also filter out more sodium, potassium and, evidently, calcium. The drugs are especially effective in patients with heart failure, relieving the characteristic swollen ankles and breathlessness.

Lim studied nearly 3,300 men aged 65 and older, about 8 percent of whom had taken the drugs either regularly or from time to time.

Lim's team measured the men's hip bone density at the start and again roughly 4-1/2 years later.

Bone loss averaged 0.78 percent annually among the 84 men who used loop diuretics regularly, compared to 0.33 percent among non-users and 0.58 percent among the 181 intermittent users.

Previous studies have associated diuretic use with a patient's risk of breaking a hip or fracturing another bone.

"However, there is uncertainty as to whether this increased fracture risk is attributable to negative effects on bone mineral density, fall-related mechanisms (such as dizziness and low blood pressure when standing up), or associated (illnesses)," Lim wrote in his report.

The men taking diuretics in the study tended to be heavier, more sedentary, and more likely to suffer from other maladies including heart disease than non-users.

Step One: Make sure you are not acidic. An acidic body causes the bones to leach minerals including calcium, even without Lasix. When you add Lasix to an acidic body you can double the above numbers! If your are acidic, a change of diet will quickly correct it. The chart below shows acidic and alkaline foods. Eat only alkaline foods until you are normal. If after 2 weeks this doesn't happen, you can make baking soda capsules. Fill a double 0 capsule with aluminum free baking soda and start with one a day. Measure your urine every morning and add 1 capsule to your quota each day until you are always alkaline!

Note: Once you have your body alkaline you need to correct the outgoing mineral deficiency. If you skip the alkalizing step and just take supplements you will not correct the situation. Your body cannot process and uptake minerals properly if the body is acidic.

Step Two: Start a regimen of trace mineral drops or pills as directed on the products. Start daily supplementation of magnesium and calcium 2:1. Which means there is 2 times as much magnesium as calcium. The magnesium should be in the citrate form and calcium should be citrate or hydroxyapitate. You can get these together in 1 convenient pill. There should be no binders (IE other ingredients) other than gelatin, veggiecap, cellulose, magnesium stearate, silica or silicon dioxide. If there are any other ingredients especially di-calcium phosphate than your body cannot break it down. You will have to go to a health food store ( GNC is not a healthfood store) to get ones that work. I personally use Soloray Cal-Mag Citrate 1:1 and take extra magnesium.

Step 3: You also must get at least 200mg of vitamin D a day. The best way to get this is 30 minutes of sunlight on exposed skin each day. You need vitamin d to utilize the minerals properly. If you must get vitamin D in supplement form use water soluble ergocalciferol. Every other form is artificial and can cause liver damage.

Step 4: Men and woman over 45 use bio-identical progesterone. Bio-identical progesterone stops bone loss and reverses osteoporosis. (Dr. Lee followed 100 post-menopausal women and men over age 45 with the average time from menopause being 16 years. The majority of this group had already noticed height loss and/or experienced a fracture. Lee's treatment goals were relief of osteoporotic pains, reduction in number of fractures, and bone density improvements. Dr. Lee's treatment included a healthy diet regime and 330-500 mg of progesterone per month. The 100 patients were followed for a minimum of 3 years. The program Lee's patient's followed included progesterone cream as well as a low protein high vegetable diet, modest exercise, and vitamin supplementation. The entire group was found to have stabilized height loss, relief of aches and pains, and no incidence of fractures. No side-effects were found. (Lee, 1991)

Men often feel this is a woman's hormone, on the contrary progesterone is the precursor to all other hormones in both men and woman. In men, it is most commonly converted into testosterone or stays as progesterone.
