Magical Love Potions, Herbal Lore and Essential Oil Combinations for Valentine's Day

There are certain scents that arouse the senses, bringing forth an amorous mood that is perfect for Valentine's Day romance. But how do you concoct just the right romantic love potion or aromatherapy recipe for the love of your life?

Here we demystify love potions and aromatherapy, providing tried-and-true combinations for you to try in a variety of ways, beginning with an article by Paula Polman, a Canadian expert in aromatherapy and herbal therapy.

Just Life the Movie, Could Love Potion #9 Really Exist? We think the right one of these potions might just make you a believer!

Love Potions

by Paula Polman

Through the ages we have been fascinated with the idea of love potions. A magic elixir that creates instant love or passion. Does Love Potion #9 really exist?

We know that scent plays a major role in the art of passion. We also know that essential oils can have noticeable effects on our moods and physical responses.

Are essential oil blends the answer? Well, science has been unable to provide any concrete answers, however, do any digging through folklore medicine references and you will certainly find all kinds of herbal suggestions and talisman ideas.

Considering the season, I thought it would be fun to pull out some love potion recipes and let you decide if you want to try any to see for yourself. I will not be held responsible for the consequences - good, bad or otherwise. Just remember the old saying "Be careful what you wish for - you just might get it!"

All these blends can be used in diffusers, used to scent body powders, to create a scented spray, in a massage oil or as a personal scent (dilute to 1% in jojoba) and worn on pulse points.

Actual formulas are not given as part of the power of a potion lies with the creator of the blend. The oils are listed in terms of what portion of the blend they form: MA=major, mi=minor, T=trace. If there is an asterisk (*) after the oil, that indicates the oil is a possible irritant and should be used with caution.

Materials Needed:

  1. Alcohol: If you are making these sprays for personal use, you can simply use a pure grain alcohol (like Blue Sky vodka ( my fav. for this or everclear) for this recipe. For this recipe you will need 1 liquid oz. (2 tablespoons).
  2. Distilled Water: For this recipe, you will need about 2 cups (16 oz.) of water.
  3. Misting Spray Bottles: This recipe will make about 16 oz. of linen spray. You can divide that into four 4 oz. spray bottles, eight 2 oz. spray bottles, or sixteen 1 oz. spray bottles.

Instructions:

  1. In a glass container large enough to hold at least 2 cups, mix 1 oz. (2 tablespoons) of alcohol with 12-18 drops of your desired essential oil or blend. Allow this mixture to sit for at least 15-30 minutes to allow time for the oils to dissolve into the alcohol.
  2. Add 2 cups of distilled water to the oil mixture and blend thoroughly.
  3. Transfer the mixture into your desired spray bottles. Normally, when essential oils are used by themselves or with water in a spray bottle, it is possible for the essential oils to clog the spraying mechanism. However, in this recipe, since the oils are dissolved into the alcohol, that is usually not a problem with most oils.
  4. To use your spritzers, shake the bottle before use and spray 1-3 times into the air, or onto your sheets, curtains, blankets, or other linens and household items. Use more or less spray as desired. Be careful not to spray towards people, especially into the eyes as the alcohol can cause stinging.

Extra Ideas:

  1. Create labels for your sprays to give them a unique personality.
  2. Create several different aromas and create a gift-basket with one of each "flavor".
