Drinking alcohol may lower risk of
rheumatoid arthritis 6-5-08
Drinking alcohol may help cut the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis by
up to 50%, suggests a study published ahead of print in the Annals of the
Rheumatic Diseases.
The study involved more than 2750 people participating in two separate studies
on association between environmental and genetic risk factors and rheumatoid
arthritis.
Scandinavian researchers compared two groups that have age, sex, and residential
locality matched, one group consisting of 1650 patients with arthritis and the
other without the disease, selected randomly from the general population.
Participants were surveyed for their lifestyle including dietary. Blood samples
were tested for genetic risk factors.
There was an inverse association between drinking alcohol and risk of developing
arthritis. Those who drank more alcohol were significantly less likely to have
rheumatoid arthritis.
The quarter of people who drank the highest amounts of alcohol was up to 50
percent less likely to develop the disease than those who drank the least.
The association was observed in both men and women.
Alcohol seemed to cut risk most in smokers with genetic risk factors for
rheumatoid arthritis. Smoking is a known major risk for developing rheumatoid
arthritis.
Recent research by other researchers showed alcohol protected against the
development and reduced the severity of rheumatoid arthritis.
The results of the current study were merely to indicate an association, not a
cause-and-effect relationship, between drinking alcohol and reduced risk of
rheumatoid arthritis, meaning drinking alcohol would not definitely lead to
reduction in the risk of the disease.
Kim Sk and colleagues from Catholic University of Daegu School of Medicine,
Daegu, South Korea reported that alcohol consumption had a negative association
with extra-articular manifestations in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Kim's study was published in the May 1, 2008 issue of the Journal of
Rheumatology.
Alcoholic beverages are recognized human carcinogens. Those who want to drink
alcohol to prevent rheumatoid arthritis should also consider the possible side
effects this chemical may cause.
Comments:
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a combination of an autoimmune disorder and a
inflammatory disorder. The natural treatments are as follows:
1. Fish Oil- I recommend Nature's Way Fisol 3-6 pills a day. Fish oil
reduces chronic inflammation
and works in the same way as a steroid.
2.
Progesterone Cream: Has been shown in studies to reduce prostaglandins
when used in combination with evening primrose oil.
3. Organic Hexane Free Evening Primrose Oil: Reduces prostaglandin
formation and inflammation.
4. Alkalize: Eat an alkaline diet and keep your body alkaline. This
prevents inflammation and further deterioration from the disease.
You can get PH tape or sticks at most pharmacies and health food stores. If
you are below 7, testing your first morning urine; you are acidic. If your are
acidic, a change of diet will quickly correct it. The chart below shows acidic
and alkaline foods. Eat only alkaline foods until you are normal. If after 2
weeks this doesn't happen, you can make baking soda capsules. Fill a double 0
capsule with aluminum free baking soda and start with one a day. Measure your
urine every morning and add 1 capsule to your quota each day until you are
always alkaline!

Note: Once you have your body alkaline you need to correct the
outgoing mineral deficiency. If you skip the alkalizing step and just take
supplements you will not correct the situation. Your body cannot process and
uptake minerals properly if the body is acidic.
