Review of the Best New Natural Appetite Suppressant Supplements, Including Pine Nut Oil 11-07-08

by Mike Adams

Natural appetite suppressants have come a long way since the days of hoodia gordonii. Today's natural appetite suppressants are more effective, more honest and even more affordable than most hoodia supplements, and they provide health-conscious consumers a realistic way to reduce the feelings of hunger while safely pursuing a reduction in their caloric intake (in other words, eating less food) that leads to sustained reductions in body fat.

Remember this: Weight loss always involves reducing caloric intake relative to caloric expenditure. You can accomplish this in only two ways: Burn more calories (through exercise or increased metabolism) or eat fewer calories. There is no other way to lose body fat, despite the hype of some weight loss gimmicks and infomercials.

Note by Dr. Beth Dupree: This is only true in those who have no metabolic challenges, food or chemical allergies, mold problems inside or out, hormonal disorders, or other medical problems; I.E.: the perfectly healthy individual who is rarely overweight anyways. This prevailing attitude, to me, is very inconsiderate. I am including this article as a guide to those who need help with appetite control.

The No. 1 reason why consumers stop dieting is because of hunger: They can't tolerate the feeling of going hungry, and they eventually reach for food and diverge from their diet. Natural appetite suppressants can keep you on track with your diet by reducing the feelings of hunger normally associated with food restrictions. When combined with sufficient exercise and healthy eating choices (like not sucking down a tub of ice cream in the middle of your diet), these supplements can help transform any diet into a complete success, delivering the body fat loss you're looking for without the hunger pangs normally associated with a reduction of food intake.

In this article, I review and recommend the three best nutritional supplements for natural appetite control. These are independent recommendations, and except for the omega-3 recommendation at the bottom of this article, I have no financial ties with any of these companies. As with any dietary supplement, be sure to work with a qualified health practitioner to make sure you are approaching your weight loss goals in a safe, informed way.

Specifically, eat nutritionally-dense superfoods to compensate for your reduction in total food intake, and drink lots of water to aid in your body's ability to efficiently metabolize stored body fat. A dehydrated body tends to hold on to fat, and even though people trying to lose weight don't want to bulk up on water weight, the truth is that drinking a lot of water is absolutely necessary for your body to let go of the fat it has stored.

#1: Pine Nut Oil

The hottest new appetite suppressant supplements on the market today are made with pine nut oil. Pine nuts contain pinolenic acid, which is a very strong appetite modulator. I discovered this myself after making a raw "grilled cheese" sandwich, which is actually a blend of raw pine nuts and olive oil, rolled in a pile of ground chia seeds.

I found that I couldn't even finish a single one of these sandwiches without feeling absolutely stuffed. Why? After a few bites, the pine nuts just turned off my appetite like somebody throwing a power switch into the "off" position. It was really that noticeable. In fact, it left me befuddled until I later learned about pinolenic acid.

Normally, you see, I can wolf down huge quantities of food. I'm a big eater, and half the reason I exercise so much is so I earn the right to eat a huge, healthy meal. To me, eating half of a tiny pine nut sandwich seemed like a simple thing. That's why I was so stunned when I couldn't finish the sandwich.

#2) Fucoxanthin with PinnoThin

What's fucoxanthin? It's a remarkable brown seaweed extract (from undaria pinnatifida) that helps block appetite while nourishing the body with various phytonutrients from the ocean.

It was made famous in the U.S. by Jordan Rubin's company (best known for The Maker's Diet), and has now been incorporated into numerous superfood products and health supplements.

An NSI product combines 400mg of PinnoThin brand pine nut oil with 200mcg of Chromium (a trace mineral known to help balance blood sugar) and 5mg of fucoxanthin.

It's a solid combination of three appetite-related ingredients that can really help control your cravings.

#3) Konjac Root or Glucomannan

It works on the basis of locking up the carbohydrates you eat into a natural fiber matrix that effectively slows the release of those carbs into your bloodstream. It's a lot like converting your foods into low-glycemic foods, right in your stomach and small intestine. It's made from konjac root (often called glucomannan) combined with sodium alginate (a seaweed) and xanthan gum (a common food thickener). Together, these three simple ingredients work wonders in slowing your digestion of carbs. They also add fiber to your diet, which has many other potential health benefits.

Slower digestion leads to greater long-term satiation, since you avoid the blood sugar roller coaster ride that leads to hunger surges a few hours later. Slow, steady digestion evens out your hunger and your insulin response -- both of which are very important for successful weight loss.

Konjac Root or Glucomannan works extremely well when taken on a regular basis. Unlike psyllium husk and some other fibers, it doesn't cause gas and bloating. But it does lower your insulin response to foods, which is hugely important for diabetics and anyone attempting to lose weight (insulin is the enemy of weight loss, in a sense). It's also completely natural, safe and fairly affordable, too. Many companies have cashed in on this product Lipozene for instance. Buying Glucomannan in powder or capsule form is cheapest, once it is labeled as konjac root the price doubles. Natures Way is about $8-15

Konjac Root or Glucomannan is also the perfect supplement to use defensively if you know you're going to a party, or a wedding or some place that you're likely to eat some cake, cookies or other sugars. Taking a few capsules of Konjac Root or Glucomannan (with plenty of water) a few minutes before eating the cake can effectively reduce the insulin spikes that would normally occur from eating refined sugars or carbohydrates.

Don't use it as a license to eat junk sugars and refined grains, however. Konjac Root or Glucomannan doesn't block the digestion of what you eat, it just slows the digestion, which is quite useful for controlling appetite and enhancing weight loss.

Why do you have cravings in the first place?

While you're thinking about controlling your appetite, you might ask yourself: Why do I have cravings in the first place?

In my experience, most people who have cravings for carbs or sugar (or even snack foods) are chronically deficient in trace minerals. A deficiency in magnesium, for example, can turn on the cravings in a wicked way.

So how do you correct this? It's simple: Eat full-spectrum salt. You can find this in the form of Celtic Sea Salt, or Royal Himalayan Salt, or other various "natural" salts.

If you already have enough salt in your diet, consider adding a trace mineral supplement instead. A new trace mineral liquid I just discovered is called Energy Boost 70, which contains 70 different mineral elements, all derived from an ancient plant source. You can find this product online at www.MSMinerals.com where you'll find a number of special offers and related mineral products for people and pets.

Another good brand of trace minerals is Concentrace, which I've used for years with great results.

These trace mineral sources will dramatically improve your weight loss results.

Don't become nutrient deficient when attempting to lose weight

The biggest mistake people make when trying to lose weight is reducing their nutritional intake as they reduce their caloric intake. This is a critical mistake.

When working to lose weight, you must greatly increase the nutritional density of your diet so that you're getting MORE nutrition with FEWER calories. You've got to drop the junk foods, filler foods and processed foods and turn to high-density superfoods and nutritional supplements that can nourish your body even while you're consuming fewer calories.

This is the big secret to weight loss that's entirely missed by most celebrities, infomercials and even many weight loss coaches: Eat MORE superfoods, drink MORE water and take MORE supplements. Only when your body is fully nourished with nutrients and minerals will it be willing to safely let go of body fat.

Omega-3s for appetite control

Speaking of nutrition, many people are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, mostly because they've been eating a diet that's way too high in omega-6 oils (corn oil, soy oil, vegetable oils, etc.) New research published in the journal Appetite(1) shows that omega-3 fatty acids can be powerful modulators of appetite.

An eight-week study of 232 overweight or obese volunteers showed significant reductions in appetite and hunger following supplementation with common omega-3 oils. "The most important finding of this study is that subjects who eat a dinner rich in long chain omega-3 fatty acids feel less hunger and more full directly after and two hours after than their counterparts fed with the low long chain omega-3 fatty acids diet," the researchers wrote. "This observation indicates that long chain omega-3 fatty acids modulate hunger signals."

The benefit of adding a potent omega-3 supplement to your diet is that it offers a multitude of additional health benefits beyond the appetite modulation potential. Marine omega-3 lipids also help support and enhance the body's neurological health, cardiovascular health, moods and cognitive function, response to inflammation and even skin and hair health.

Note from Dr. Beth Dupree: I hear about see oils all the time and of course my first concern is always toxins. These companies pass my very stringent tests: Lyprinol and Moxxor (MLM)

The bottom line on appetite control

Appetite can be controlled by a variety of natural supplements. It is important, however, to view weight loss as more than just a way to "trick" the body into eating less. Successful reductions in body fat absolutely must include regular cardiovascular exercise, enhancement of lean body mass, reductions in total caloric intake and an increase in superfood nutrition and hydration.

Without these elements in place, sustained fat loss is simply not possible. There is no single magic pill that can cause you to look fit and slim. Achieving that result will require lifelong changes in your diet and the regular pursuit of cardiovascular exercise activities.

When you do those things, appetite suppressant supplements can make your journey easier, but they are not a replacement for regular exercise and a smart diet.
