Infected mosquito attacks CDC West Nile expert 6-23-08
CDC experts are supposed to go after mosquitoes infected with the West Nile
virus. But media reports that All Lyle Peterson, a CDC health official, got
attacked by an infected mosquito.
It occurred when he walked down his driveway in Fort Collins, Colorado and
chatted briefly with a neighbor and returned to his house.
Within hours of being bitten, Mr. Petersen knew based on what he felt that he
got West Nile. Later blood work confirmed his suspicion.
Petersen is director of the division of vector borne diseases at the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, which monitors mosquito activities along with
other health agencies.
“From my own experience, I can tell you it's not a very mild illness," Petersen
was quoted by CNN as cautioning. "It will ruin your summer."
West Nile causes no symptoms in 80 percent of people who get the virus. The rest
20 percent experience often mild symptoms. Only in rare cases, would people
develop serious complications from the infection.
The CDC recommends people use a repellent known as DEET. It is not known whether
Mr. Petersen wore some repellent to prevent mosquitoes' bites when he was
outdoors.
Comment:
We all know DEET isn't safe. Essential Oils Are!
Eucalyptus Radiata, Lemongrass and Black Pepper have all been tested and
show promising results in repelling mosquitoes.
