FDA: Asthma patients should get new inhalers 5-30-08

WASHINGTON - Old-fashioned asthma inhalers that contain environment-harming chemicals will quit selling at year's end — and the government is urging patients not to wait until the last minute to switch to newer alternatives.

Patients use inhalers that dispense airway-relaxing albuterol during asthma attacks.

Chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, once were widely used to propel the drug into the lungs. But CFC-containing consumer products are being phased out because CFCs damage the Earth's protective ozone layer. As of Dec. 31, CFC-containing asthma inhalers can no longer be made or sold in the U.S. — and inhalers are being powered instead by ozone-friendly HFAs, or hydrofluoroalkanes.

Patients have been warned of the change for several years — but the Food and Drug Administration is issuing an advisory Friday saying anyone still using CFC inhalers should ask their doctor about switching now.

The FDA warns that the patients will face a learning curve: HFA inhalers may taste and feel different. The spray may feel softer. Each must be primed and cleaned in a specific way to prevent clogs. And they tend to cost more.

CFC-free options: GlaxoSmithKline's Ventolin HFA, Schering Plough's Proventil HFA and Ivax Corp.'s Proair HFA, all containing albuterol. Also, Sepracor's Xopenex HFA contains levalbuterol, a similar medication.

The FDA said Armstrong Pharmaceuticals is the sole remaining maker of CFC inhalers and is expected to stop production even before the deadline — although an agency spokesman wouldn't provide a date. Armstrong could not immediately be reached for comment.

Comment:

As an asthmatic and the parent of an asthmatic I have already been dealing with this situation. Unfortunately, we have found the new HFA inhalers don't work as well. If you are severely asthmatic this leaves you with only one other option, Nebulizers!

As you may or may not know, the more you use a rescue inhaler the less it works! A rescue inhaler should only be used as a last resort. When you first start to feel an asthma attack coming on you need to be pro active right then by relaxing, putting a drop of Breathe Ease Essential Oil Blend on your chest and wrist, drinking hot coffee, taking lobelia capsules, proper breathing techniques and or mixing any of these methods to get relief so that you can you less or no rescue inhaler! Also get a AeroChamber or other spacer to make better use and technique of your inhaler! Get a Peak Flow Meter, find your appropriate range and work at getting into that range. Believe it or not, you need to exercise the lungs! Learning proper breathing, playing an instrument that requires blowing, or a lung exerciser ( respiratory muscle trainer), walking, singing daily, or swimming are all great ways to build up your lungs and get rid of asthma and at least stay within your peak flow and reduce medication.

Being naturally proactive about your asthma is the best way to reduce medication and improve quality of life. Take molecularly distilled fish oil 2 times a day (2-4 Nature's Way Fisoil or 4-6 1000mg capsules of regular fish oil). Fish oil is an amazing anti-inflammatory and works like a steroid. Use Bella Mira Breathe Ease Oil Blend as Part of your asthma regimen. It stops an asthma attack within a minute for me!

Reducing all dirty and foreign particles your children's air not only raises IQ, but reduces asthma and allergies. The greatest gift you can give your children as well as yourself is to quit smoking. If you choose not to, at least never allow smoking in your house or car even when your children aren't present. The over 3000 chemical particles found in cigarette smoke cling to everything and can be stirred back up at anytime.

Use allergen barrier covers for all mattresses and pillows. They are not plastic like they used to be and are not noticeable at all under sheets. If you have to have carpets in your Child's room vacuum weekly and use Fabreeze Allergen Reducer (Do Not use Regular Fabreeze use only the one marked Alleregen Reducer, Do not use any Fabreeze if you have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity) or a dust mite spray on all fabric or furry things. Always run an ionizing HEPA filter. The Holmes brand room size for under $25 works just fine!

When it comes to carpet care there is a brand of vacuum that uses water to run the air through so 100% of all airborne pollutants are captured. It's called HYLA and is the best vacuum around. For more information on it email me. In your current vacuum make sure you use HEPA Filters if your vacuum has them. Or buy the strongest filtration you can get. If you have a bin type vacuum, never empty inside the home; all the dust you just vacuumed up will go everywhere.

If you have a furnace don't use those cheap Blue filters. Make sure your filter has a MERV rating of  7+ or it is useless. A MERV 7 or higher filter will remove mold, dander and many other dangerous pollutants.

Strive to use no chemical cleaners. These release harmful volatile organic compounds into the air. Read the Article Easy Substitutions for Healthier Living for hints on switching to healthy cleaners.

If you own pets bathe them at least once a month. Feed them correctly and they will produce very few allergens.

Following these simple tips will drastically reduce dust and millions of other nasty particles; which will keep you and your children healthier and as this new study show, smarter.
