Sea buckthorn protects the liver - study 5-28-08

A study in Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture suggests that an ethanol extract of sea buckthorn, found rich in vitamin C, vitamin E, flavonoids and essential fatty acids, may be used as a preventative against liver disease.

Berries of the plant have already been found beneficial for conditions such as cholesterol, heart disease, and inflammation due probably to their antioxidant and immunomodulatory activity.

The current study led by researchers from India's Defense Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences showed sea buckthorn extracts protected the liver in rats from being damaged by a hepatotoxin.

In the study, the researchers prepared an extract of sea buckthorn leaves collected from the Western Himalayas with ethanol and tested the preparation in Male Albino rats for its hepatoprotective effect.

Rats in eight groups were either pretreated with saline or various doses of sea buckthorn leaf extract for five days and then subject to exposure to a dose of carbon tetrachloride to induce hepatotoxicity.

The researchers found rats pretreated with leaf extract at a concentration of 100mg and 200mg significantly protected the animals' liver from being injured by the liver damaging agent.

Leaf extracts of sea buckthorn have been found in previous studies to have significant antioxidant and immunomodulatory activity and protect against chromium-induced oxidative stress in rats, nutraingredients.com reports.

Berries of the plant also have been found able to reduce concentrations of a protein that is associated with inflammation, diabetes and heart disease, according to a Finnish study.
