Statins lower cholesterol levels, but not much of heart risk 5-25-08

Business Week on January 17 published an article by John Carey saying that except among high risk heart patients, the benefits of statins such as Liptor, which are used to lower cholesterol levels by 13 millions of Americans in hopes to reduce their heart risk, are quite limited.

The article says trial results indicate that among those who take Liptor, a cholesterol lowering drug manufactured by Pfizers, only 1% of patients may benefit from the drug in reducing his heart risk while 99% people do not experience any benefit during a 3.3-year period.

In addition, the drugs are not inexpensive. The cholesterol lowering drugs sold by Merck, AstraZeneca, and Bristol-Myers Squibb in addition to Pfizer earned the drug makers 27.8 billions in sales in 2006 in the U.S. alone, according to the article. These medications can also cause side effects in an estimated 10% to 15% of statin users including muscle pain, cognitive impairments, and sexual dysfunction.

The report suggests that “Perhaps urging people to switch to a Mediterranean diet or simply to eat more fish. In several studies, both lifestyle changes brought greater declines in heart attacks than statins, though the trials were too small to be completely persuasive.”

Comment:

Anyone who talks to me or reads the news on a regular basis, knows how much this issue ruffles my feathers! First of all cholesterol is a healthy part of the body. All hormones are made from cholesterol as well as the brain is almost 100% cholesterol! Not a good idea to try to remove cholesterol! Second, if you have high cholesterol it is a sign something is wrong in the body. The problem is always low hormones somewhere; usually thyroid or estrogen or testosterone. Fix the underlying hormonal problem and cholesterol numbers go back to normal.

There are many time I quit taking my thyroid medicine ( I don't have a thyroid) because I wanted to use natural treatments. Well my cholesterol would skyrocket to over 300. When I would go back on medication my levels would return back to 170!

Third, no one has ever died or had a heart attack from high cholesterol! In most other civilized countries they don't even test for it, routinely! People have heart attacks mostly from inflammation. The C-reactive protein test and the SED rate test are the two most important test to tell you if a heat attack could be on it's way.

Fourth, so you want to prevent a heart attack. You will need to make lifestyle changes. Eat an alkaline diet, no grains, less meat and less (no pasteurized) diary, more vegetables, fruit and ionized water. Add molecularly distilled fish oil to your regimen. At least 3 pills a day of Nature's Way Fisoil (entericly coated) or 6 pills of any other. If you are always stressed add Kava Kava to your regimen, especially if your systolic blood pressure is high. Exercise at least 2 times a week. Just take a 30 minute walk, bike ride, leisure swim (non- chlorinated pool) play with pets etc..
