Vegan KFC? 7-8-08

Whatever you want to call it - fake meat, unchicken, chick'n - a mock chicken product will now be offered at KFC's Canadian outposts.

That's right - America's favorite source for buckets of finger lickin' goodness will now come with a vegan option up north.

According to an article in the Kentucky Post, KFC Canada and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have been at odds for five years over the companies' practices. Now, the two sides have come to a deal where the Canadian chain will improve its chicken slaughter conditions and introduce vegan menu options at 461 stores.

The article says the market for mock meat, which is often soy-based, remains small, but will get a whole lot bigger with KFC's offerings.

David Alexander, director of operations for the Toronto Vegetarian Association, is quoted: "It means more choice for people who are vegetarian and more options for people thinking about it."

PETA will now call off its Kentucky Fried Cruelty campaign in Canada, according to the article, but will continue to pressure KFC in the United States and elsewhere to change its slaughter practices, and sell unchicken.

Comment:

Kentucky Fried Chicken is not alone in the way they treat chicken. Most of the industry cuts of their beaks and feet from birth. This is so they can be force feed the horrible food they would normally never eat and so they cannot exercise making the breast super big. It is sick and inhumane. I actually saw this on the discovery channel not a PETA video.

As long as Americans don't care about food quality, overeat and want everything now; the situation will never change.

Soy nuggets are not the answer either. I wish they would outlaw soy in this country like so many others have. Their are much tastier ways to make meat analogs. Quorn uses a fungus (don't eat if you are allergic to any mold) and is delicious, you can use vegetables and beans etc..
