New study: Vitamin D reduces breast
cancer risk 10-19-08
In this month, readers would read a lot of keywords like breast cancer
awareness, pink, survivors, supporters, walk, volunteers, donations, cancer
research, and the American Cancer Society among others.
We have said this and now say it again that we need to take our own initiatives
to prevent breast cancer. You should not wait for others to figure out a cure
for the disease, which cannot be possible because it would ruin the cancer
business. As for donations, forget about it because Uncle Sam has invested about
20 billion on cancer research on your behalf each year already.
One study to report here is about the effect of vitamin D on the risk of breast
cancer.
The study led by Blackmore KM and colleagues from Mount Sinai Hospital in
Ontario, Canada showed that increased intake of vitamin D through diet and
exposure to the sun was associated with a 24 percent reduced risk of
estrogen-receptor- (ER) and progesterone-receptor- (PR) defined breast cancer.
The study compared 758 cases of breast cancer and 1135 controls without the
disease and found those who had high intake of vitamin D were also found to have
a 26 percent reduced risk of ER-/PR- breast cancer and a 21 percent decreased
risk of ER+/PR- tumors.
The study published in the Oct 15, 2008 issue of American Journal of
Epidemiology suggests that vitamin D was associated with a reduce risk of breast
cancer regardless of ER/PR status of the tumor.
Vitamin D is found in a limited number of foods including oily fish, fortified
foods such as juices, cereals and milk and most conveniently is synthesized
after an individual is exposed to sunshine.
The current recommended daily allowance for vitamin D is ridiculously low, many
experts have complained. They recommended that the minimal daily intake should
be 1,000 International Units per day, which is what Canada is going to
recommend.
Vitamin D have been associated with a range of cancers. People should not fear
to expose themselves to sunshine. Experts have warned that insufficient exposure
to sunlight leads to vitamin D deficiency which in turns would increase risk of
much more serious types of cancer.
Once again, forget about donations and going pink. Instead, take care of
yourselves by starting to equip yourselves with cancer knowledge and following a
healthy lifestyle. After all, breast cancer is preventable.
