Amy Winehouse suffers emphysema 6-23-08

Amy Winehouse is suffering early stage emphysema, POEPLE Magazine reports, citing her father as saying.

The diagnosis came days after she collapsed and was rushed to a local hospital on June 16. Initially she was suspected to have had tuberculosis, but tests ruled that disease out.

Emphysema is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and often caused by exposure to toxic chemicals or long-term exposure to tobacco smoke.

"With smoking the crack cocaine and the cigarettes her lungs are all gunked up," Mitch Winehouse was quoted as telling the Sunday Mirror in the U.K. "There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She's got 70 percent lung capacity."

The 24-year-old singer fainted in her London home when she was trying to reach out of her home to sign autographs for some Canadian fans.

Doctors in the London Clinic, a private hospital, were reportedly serious about Winehouse's condition. "When we got to the hospital a room was ready," Mitch Winehouse, the singer’s father, told the newspaper quoted by the magazine.

"Several doctors came in and checked to make sure she didn't need any emergency treatment. They put her on a drip straight away because she was dehydrated. She said, 'Don't worry about me, dad. I know I've got to stop taking drugs now.'"

Winehouse had been awake for 48 hours before being hospitalized, her father said. In the hospital, she "curdled up in bed and slept for three straight days, he was cited as saying.

From what her father said, Winehouse's condition was in its early stages. But had it gone on for another month without intervention, she could sit there like an old person with a mask on her face struggling to breathe.

Media reports that she has a 70 percent of the capacity of her lungs. The singer’s publicist, Chris Goodman was quoted as saying in a telephone interview that the 24-year-old “has an early form of emphysema,” and “It's totally reversible and she's responded well to treatment.'”

Emphysema is often irreversible. The progressive lung condition impairs the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, leading to symptoms including shortness of breath and coughing.

People who suffer the condition may experience loss of appetite and weight loss and fatigue in addition to mild, yet chronic cough. In the case of Winehouse, she does look “skinny” and could have had a few more pounds.

Smoking is one of the major risk factors for the condition in the lungs. A small percentage of people lack a gene that would otherwise produce a protein called alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAt) which is protective against emphysema. Those without the protein would likely have the disease in their 30s or 40s.

The most important measure to slow its progression is to stop smoking and avoid all exposure to cigarette smoke and lung irritants, according to wikipedia.
Winehouse, the Grammy award winning singer, planned early to perform at the June 27 concert in London’s Hyde Park to mark former South African President Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday, but it is unknown if she could make it.

Comment:

Emphysema is a terrible disease when not self inflicted, however in her case she did it to herself. Bella Mira Breathe Ease oil is a wonderful treatment and greatly relieves the worst symptoms.
