Interesting Facts:  Nutmeg is not a nut, but the kernel of an apricot-like fruit. Mace is an arillus, a thin leathery tissue between the stone and the pulp; it is bright red to purple when harvested, but after drying changes to amber. It is one of the natural flavors in Coca Cola. Externally, the oil is used for rheumatic pain and, like clove oil, can be applied as an emergency treatment to dull toothache. To prepare for childbirth, massage the abdomen daily in the three weeks before the baby is due with a mixture of 5 drops nutmeg oil and no more than 5 drops sage oil in 25 ml almond oil. Approximately 75% (by weight) of nutmeg butter is trimyristin which can be turned into myristic acid, a 14-carbon fatty acid which can be used as replacement for cocoa butter, can be mixed with other fats like cottonseed oil or palm oil, and has applications as an industrial lubricant. Saint Theodore the Studite was famous for allowing his monks to sprinkle nutmeg on their pease pudding when required to eat it. Connecticut gets its nickname ("the Nutmeg State") from the legend that some unscrupulous Connecticut traders would whittle "nutmeg" out of wood, creating a "wooden nutmeg" (a term which came to mean any fraud).

Nutmeg Oil Benefits: Nutmeg essential oil may have adrenal cortex-like activity (supporting adrenal - increasing energy). Nutmeg essential oil beneficial for fainting, nervous fatigue, strong psycho stimulant, invigorates and activates mind, can produce intense dreams (color). Nutmeg essential oil decreases bad breath, aids intestinal infections, encourages appetite, frigidity, impotence, neuralgia (severe pain along nerve), nervous fatigue, gout, muscle aches and pains, rheumatism, arthritis, gas, poor circulation, heart stimulant, chronic diarrhea, aiding digestion of starchy foods and fats, halitosis, loss of appetite. Nutmeg essential oil eases sprains, strains, fatigue and congestion after sports.

Nutmeg Oil Properties (Constituents): terpene hydrocarbons (sabinene and pinenes; furthermore camphene, p-cymene, phellandrene, terpinene, limonene, myrcene, together 60 to 80%), terpene derivatives (linalool, geraniol, terpineol, together 5 to 15%) and phenylpropanoids (myristicin, elemicin, safrol, eugenol and eugenol derivatives, together 15 to 20%). Of the latter group, myristicin (methoxy-safrole, typically 4%) is responsible for the hallucinogenic effect of nutmeg.

Safety Information: If used in large amounts 5ml +, can cause toxic symptoms such as nausea and tachycardia.
