Study: Dogs, cats polluted with high levels of toxic industrial chemicals 4-21-08

Cats and dogs are more polluted with toxic synthetic industrial chemicals than humans, according to a new study released on April 17 by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which has early found a range of toxic chemicals in newborns.

The study of blood and urine samples from 20 dogs and 40 cats showed the pets were contaminated with 48 of 70 industrial chemicals tested including 43 at levels higher than those typically found in people.

Dogs had 2.4 times higher levels of perfluorochemicals used as strain- and grease-proof coatings and cats had 23 times more flame retardants or PBDEs and more than 5 times the amounts of mercury compared to average levels in people found in national studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the EWG.

The findings are significant because as the EWG said dogs and cats may be serving as sentinels for human health problems that can arise from exposures to industrial chemicals due to their closeness to humans.

"The presence of chemicals in dogs and cats sounds a cautionary warning for the present and future health of children as well. This study demonstrating the chemical body burden of dogs and cats is a wake-up call for stronger safety standards from industrial chemical exposures that will protect all members of our families, including our pets," said Jane Houlihan, VP for Research at EWG.

"This study is valuable in that it used pet animals that live in nearly fifty percent of all US households as environmental sentinels to measure the level of contamination with a wide variety of industrial chemicals that have also been shown to be present in human tissue," said Dr. Larry Glickman – a leading veterinarian and distinguished scientist who for the past three decades conducted research in veterinary epidemiology.

"Because pet animals tend to have similar or higher concentrations of these chemicals in their body than humans, epidemiological studies of pets can be used to identify potential adverse health effects at a lower cost and in a much shorter period of time than it would take to perform similar studies in humans."

The EWG suggests in a statement that dogs and cats just like children ingest pollutants in tap water, processed foods, play on lawns with pesticide residues or breathe in an array of indoor air contaminants. But the pets are more sensitive than children to the toxicity of the pollutants and they can develop health problems faster than children because they have a shorter lifespan, developing and aging seven or more times faster than children.

According to the EWG, under current federal law, chemical companies do not have to prove chemicals are safe before they are used in products including pet toys and other products for dogs and cats.

Previous studies have found cats are contaminated with high levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers or PBDEs, persistent chemicals used in carpet pads, furniture, and electronic. A study by Janice Dye, a U.S. EPA research biologist showed "All cats are high [compared with humans], and some cats are incredibly high."

The current study may in part explain why dogs have high rates of cancer and cats have high incidence of hyperthyroidism. The findings suggest that industrial pollutants in our food and environment may also pose a serious health risk to humans.

Comments:

Pets are more susceptible to toxins than humans as they are closer to the ground. However the problem is caused entirely by humans. On this site everyday I tell you different ways to keep everyone in your family healthier including pets. However, interestingly enough, people will eat absolute garbage and feed their pets the best foods possible! I plead with you to follow these hints , not just for your pets, but for yourselves! Most of this information in greater quantities can be found at our Pet Place page.

1. Feed your pets a gluten free, organic diet free of chemicals and pesticides

2. Give them distilled water in glass, steel, or ceramic (lead free) bowls. Add trace minerals if you choose to.

3. Don't use perfumed cat litter. Use only clay, wood, pea pod, or other mold free non grain source. Cat litters made out of corn, wheat, or other grains, sound green on the surface but your pets bathe and ingest them. They are often full of toxic mold and cause allergies to other family members and the pets them selves. Honestly the best litter is pesticide free dirt from your yard. Dig a hole and use the dirt to fill the litter box, when needed dump the dirty dirt in the hole and get more. When the hole is full put more fresh dirt on top and start another hole. You can risk worms this way, so if this is a concern cook the dirt in the oven for 1 hour at 350 degrees. Bagged Organic Dirt is still way cheaper than litter and often a softer choice.

4. Don't feed treats that aren't gluten free, or organic. The best treats are homemade. Dogs love pieces of apple, carrot, organic meat, etc. Anything good for you is good for your dog! Cats are pickier and like organic catnip, dehydrated meat treats (Halo Pets), vegan unsweetened carob chips, cheese, cottage cheese, etc.. Never feed dogs or cats Chocolate! Carob tastes just like it, but is safe.

5. Don't use any chemicals to clean the house, anywhere! We sell everything you need to clean a house chemical free. There are also many chemical free cleaners available at most health food stores. However check the ingredients, about 1/2 out there should not be sold in a health food store!

6. Don't use drop ins (2000 flushes ect) in your toilet. These are harmful to your pets. With the exception of the one brand that is only borax. The toilet vials we sell work even better and save you money!

7. Don't use are fresheners, plug -in's, scented oil burners etc.. These are highly toxic, causing headaches, congestion, allergies, malaise, etc.. Essential oils are a much healthier choice!

8. Don't use spot on (Advantage, Frontline ect..) Or any other kind of flea and tick treatments. Read our Everyday solutions for pet problems to show you how to deal with them naturally. Use nematodes, borax, garlic and brewers yeast pills, and electric flea collars; these all work better and safer.

9. Don't use any chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or enhancements in your yard. You can get all natural ones from us that work allot better and are less expensive.

10. Don't use pet shampoo's, perfumes, or deodorant's. They are expensive and chemically laden. Use your own chemical free product's on your pets. You will be happier with the results and will save a lot of many you can buy pet toys with!

11. Do not get your pets vaccinated unless absolutely necessary. Read this excerpt from the veterinary textbooks. If more Vets followed what they were taught and not what drug companies tell them; your pets would be healthier!

Remember, your vet plays the same games with drug companies as doctors do.

These are just the major steps. You will find if you follow these steps your pet will be healthier, illnesses and allergies will go away and your costs will go down. You will be able to afford the higher cost of food because you wont have all the other costs and vet bills.

FYI- Vets sell Science Diet because it paid for their schooling, not because it is healthy. If they agree to sell it (and only Sell it) and recommend it for 10 years their schooling is paid for. This includes so called prescription diets which are also Science Diet. You may notice when a Vet has been around past 10 years then they often carry other brands!
